Chiropractic is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints and muscles), and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on
manual treatments
including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation. Chiropractors have a specialist interest in neck and back pain, but when they assess their patient they take their entire physical, emotional and social well-being into account.
Chiropractic is based on a very simple concept. Your body is literally a ‘machine’. It has power sources, wiring, electricity and lubrication. However, like all machines it also has a mechanical structure. That mechanical structure, with the spine as its most important support and carrier of the major nervous system, can become damaged, distorted or irritated. The result is often acute or nagging pain, which you may feel not only in the back but also in the head, neck, arms and legs. Your chiropractor has the training and experience to minimise the symptoms of these conditions.
In chiropractic, the emphasis is on prevention and ‘adjustment’. According to the condition being treated, one or more of a whole range of different chiropractic adjusting techniques can be employed.
